Nobel for Ngugi wa Thiong’o? Not this time!

Literature lovers in Kenya have been waiting with bated breath for the announcement that the winner of the Nobel Prize in literature would be one of their own, Ngugi wa Thiong’o, since he had been picked out once again as a favourite to win.

The results, announced Thursday afternoon, however, indicate that Kenyans will have to wait longer for the coveted Nobel prize.

The 2014 Nobel prize for literature has gone to the little-known French author Patrick Modiano. A poll on the Nobel prize website indicated on Thursday afternoon that 91 per cent of the 1,617 that took the poll had never read anything by him.

He was awarded the prize for “the art of memory with which he has evoked the most ungraspable human destinies and uncovered the life-world of the occupation.”
