More than 250 ethnic tribes exist in present-day Nigeria. The three largest and most dominant ethnic groups are the Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo. According to historical records, prior to Europeans conquest, these ethnic groups had separate and independent histories. Their grouping together into a single entity known as Nigeria was a construct of the British colonizer. “The histories of the people in northern and southern Nigeria prior to colonization followed vastly different paths”.
